This essay will focus on the names of precious stones and minerals which were known and praised for their extraordinary properties in Old High German glosses and glossaries. The research aims to shed light on the circulation of stone lore in medieval Germany, and the strategies employed by the glossators when approaching this peculiar lexical field. In a number of cases, the interpretamentum takes the form of an explanatory gloss, providing a short description of the stone, which can include details on its colour, shape and physical properties. Glossing the Old Frisian Psalter: Pragmatics and Competence

The essay takes into examination the interlinear glosses in Old Frisian in the fragment of Psalter in ms. Groningen, Universiteitsbibliotheek 404. This is the oldest medieval Frisian fragmentary codex to survive and contains verses of Psalms XVII, XXVII, and XVIII, accompanied by glosses in the vernacular. This essay is the first lengthy study specifically devoted to the typology of the glosses themselves and their peculiarities (within the field of interlinear glosses). The Names of the ‘Pearl’ in the Old High German Glosses and Glossaries

The essay will provide a scrutiny of the words merigrioz and perala occurring in the Old High German glosses to render the Latin words for ‘pearl’, i.e. unio and margarita, with the purpose of mapping the distribution and the contexts of use of the OHG words. The analysis will contribute to trace the origin of the German word for ‘pearl’, starting from the earliest stage of the language and – from a perspective of language contact – which takes into account the Latin counterparts of these OHG glosses.

According to a letter written in 1390, Guillem Nicolau attached a full commentary to his Catalan translation of Ovid’s Heroides. Although these glosses have not survived in any of the extant manuscripts of this translation, they have been preserved in a fifteenth-century manuscript containing an anonymous Castilian version of the Catalan text. In this article, the linguistic- and literary-based identification of these Castilian glosses with those written by Nicolau leads to a further examination of the relationship of the Catalan Heroides to the Latin commentary tradition.
